dcpPlayer is a software based DCP (Digital Cinema Package) player for the Windows operating system. dcpPlayer is designed to allow viewing of a non-encrypted DCP's without the need of a cinema with hardware based DCP player and projector.

DCP's is standard created by DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative) for the distribution of Features, Trailers and Advertisements in a digital format that equals that of film. Up until dcpPlayer, you would need $100,000 in equipment and a cinema to simply view a DCP.

The Future

DCP's use and open codec called JPEG2000. This codec is free to use. It also supports 12bit colour depth and 4K images. DCI selected JPEG2000 because of its amazing quality and capabilities. It is also being adopted by many archival systems who want to keep as much quality as possible. DCP's with JPEG2000 will become a major industry codec and technology over the next 10 years.
